Last week my theme for Storytimes was "COWS". My favorite is Calico Cows
by Arlene Dabnovich. 2 year olds put colored stickers on cow faces . Of course, "this little cow eats grass etc." and Old MacDonald's cows said moo.
This week my theme was "APPLES". I love "TEN RED APPLES" by Virginia Miller(Bartholomew and his kitten are soo cute) and don't forget "TEN RED APPLES" by Pat Hutchins. Older groups heard stories about Johnny Appleseed and William Tell. Everyone had to "shake the apple tree".

Once again Great Valley elementary school librarians have loaned their library collections to Malvern to meet the summer reading requirements at each grade level. We circulated their books 3,183 times.The collection has been returned to the individual schools(except for a few not yet returned to us!)and we only have our own copies to check out.We are thankful for this school-library cooperation that allows us to meet a need.

Yes, it's over. Not final # for babies thru 5th grade is 442 registered!Yes, we will be buying a water baffulo thru Heifer International in the name of "Malvern Summer Readers". It will not be here in person! Summer was fun but now it's time to plan for Fall Story Times. Schedules are available at the desk and registration will begin Tuesday, September 6. Our registrations are IN-PERSON ONLY. First Story Times will begin the week of September 19.

The first week of summer programs is over. Thanks to Katie Acker for preparing and presenting a counting/numbers from Africa program for our 3-6 year olds storytimes. I had a lot of fun with it because the kids are so great. The first program is hard because routines are not yet set but, as always, we have a great group of kids. Craft time on Thursday was a surprise to me because I planned making "friendship bracelets" thinking everyone would have made at least one and it might be boring. NO!1 boy said he always wanted to know how to do this. Well, you just never know!

It's time! Tuesday, September 7 begins Fall Storytime registrations. We prefer in-person registrations because our space is limited and we often have a reserve list . On-line and phone registrations have proven to be less committed to regular attendance and prone to drop-out without notifying us. This shuts out other children. We do accept phone registration afternoons after 1:00 but PLEASE know what you want when you call. Reading the schedule to you is denying someone standing in front of us timely service.

WOW! What a summer. Many are registered for Independent Reading plus storytimes and programs. There is still time to get in on the fun. If a class is filled one week - try the next week. Because supplies must be purchased registration is concluded 2 days before the program. So don't wait until the last minute! Science In The Summer is coming up the week of July 26 and the first drawing for classes has been completed. If there are cancellations that spot needs to be filled so don't give up hope -- you could still be in.

There is still time to sign up for summer reading. The Independent Reading Program is the most important part of the summer plan. Don't let your child fall behind in reading skills. We have craft programs, special programs, and family programs, and storytimes. Please stop in and look at our schedule of activities. Late May and early June I have visited schools and met with around 1500 children encouraging them to go to their local library and keep reading. No time for blogging but days are back on a schedule now .

This summer for babies-2 year olds a reading readiness booklet will be available. Adult and child can participate and receive a certificate and reward at the end of the summer. Babies thru High school are able to participate in this program. Even if your grade school has a program ,any reading will count for the library also. Please look for full information the middle of May.

SCIENCE in THE SUMMER registration for the lottery will begin Monday, May 3. Our classes will be the week of July 26.This popular program is free to you but is under written by GLAXOSMITHKLINE. We are able to offer this program to 64 children entering grade2 -6. The topic is genetics.

April - Poetry Month

It's easy to celebrate poetry month. Say a nursery rhyme - picture books often rhyme - poetry books can be located in libraries starting at 811 - pick a word and see how many rhyming words you can think of with your child - Dr. Seuss books rhyme. I will be saying a poem at storytimes for ages 3 up. Write a poem with your child and bring it in to me and we will make a booklet.

"Children who know 8 nursery rhymes by heart by the time they are 4 yrs old are usually among the best readers by the time they are 8 yrs old." Reading Magic by Mem Fox . Check P85 in the library copy and then read the whole book. Now you know why I have a nursery rhyme with my preschool times and repeat it at least 4 weeks before I change it.

Phonathon time ended Monday night. If you received a phone call from a person whose name you didn't recognise, it could have been a volunteer using their own cell phone at the library for our 1 great fund-raising effort. Sunday and Monday nights 10-12 people had a great time talking to patrons of this library and taking pledges of support. In this time of dwindling support from state, county and township funding , it was encouraging to have our patrons support us with their pledges.

Last night I was 1 of many guest readers at General Wayne Elementary School. It was fun and several former storytime kids stopped in to say "hi". Mrs Rothberg,the librarian, organized the "Family Storytime".
On Friday Willistown Preschool will visit at 9:30.This is re-scheduled from last Friday when we were closed because of the snow.

Today the heater can't keep up with the cold. It is 20 degrees outside and 59 inside. The children's area is cold. If you are planning a visit today, tomorrow and even for baby storytime on Monday be prepared. We do have a small heater for the storytime room and it should be warmer outside on Monday. Repairmen are here and have been all day. We are wearing sweaters, coats and even occasionally put on our gloves!

Teen shelvers

Between 3:30 and 6 o'clock you will notice a High school age girl and boy shelving book returns. They are paid staff so be sure to ask them to help you find the book you're looking for. They most likely will know where it is because they shelved it! They can also help you use the patron computer catalog in the children's area.

Today Daisy Troop 41627 visited the Library after school. They had their meeting, toured the Library, heard stories , and made a craft. Most of the girls had been preschool storytime attenders. The Library needs about 2-3 weeks to arrange a visiting time for groups.

This is a busy week for group visits! This morning 25- 8th graders from St Patrick School arrived in the rain for their pre-arranged visit. They were here to do research on their individually chosen topics. This is a long term research project. Because of the heavy rain and wind we were operating on generator. We are fortunate to have the generator because we share the building with the police department. During their visit electricity was restored but most computer research had to be repeated . Immediately after their departure we had our regular baby storytime.

Make a Splash - Summer Theme

The summer reading theme for 2010 is "Make a Splash - Read". I am looking for programs for children ages 4 up through teen-age. Could you suggest a presenter for a fishing program (fishing pole stuff) or aquatic amimals, swimming, science of water, etc. Do you have other ideas? We still want to offer great programs this summer even though we are suffering deep funding cuts.

New Rule for Charges on Your Card

All Chester County Libraries are now unable to check out materials to you if you have $10 or more in fees and late charges on your card. If you have an e-mail address listed with us you will be notified whenever you have materials due. You can renew on -line if materials are not overdue. Call us (610-644-7259 ) if you can not renew on-line. We can usually do it but there are exceptions.

Grade School Readers

By the end of 3rd grade students are past learning to read and now begin to read to learn. This means that in 4th grade they can read rather well . Recreational reading can be below reading level - it's for FUN and is still good practice. Remember - 15- 20 minutes a day makes a big difference.

PA 2009 book for preschoolers

For the last several years Pennsylvania One book Every young Child has selected a book by Pennsylvania authors to highlight for preschoolers, The 2009 book is If You Were a Penquin by Wendell and Florence Minor. We will be reading it in Storytimes in January. You can find copies of all the selected books at the beginning of the parenting books on top of the picture book (jE) case.
